The hostage situation regarding an American Captain and Somali pirates took days to resolve. This seemed strange to me if decisive action had been taken and the pirates were taken out at the first opportunity.
According to reports the Navy ship had been towing the little pirate boat, which to my understanding was actually furnished by the hijacked ship when the pirate craft sunk during the hijacking, for quite a while and the pirates were nearing their objective of making it back to land with their hostage. Now more details are emerging as to why this took so long.
According to a recent article,
"Multiple opportunities to free the captain of the Maersk Alabama from three young pirates were missed, these sources say – all because a Navy SEAL team was not immediately ordered to the scene and then forced to operate under strict, non-lethal rules of engagement."
